Chapter 15

“The hall hardly gets used these days.” Sally dropped the keys into Tamsin’s outstretched hand. “Excuse the dust. Might need a sweep out before this afternoon’s class.”

Tamsin looked around the space that would house her new dance school. Slightly rusted fans hung overhead promising to assist the big picture windows in keeping the space cool in the hot Queensland summers. The wooden floor told a story of many booted feet through the years while the stage sat front and centre of the room inviting her to tread its ageing boards. The red velvet curtains sagged exhausted from years of neglect. The Community Hall looked like every other community hall across Australia and it would do just fine.

“Thank you so much for the great deal on rent too,” she said.

“Ah, it’s nothing. I’m just grateful someone wants to use the place. Ever since the amateur theatre company closed up five years ago hardly anyone sets foot in here.” Sally tucked a stray hair behind her ear. “Um, can I ask you a question?”

“Sure.”

Sally couldn’t meet Tamsin’s eye. “What exactly do you wear to a burlesque class?”

Tamsin laughed. “A corset and fishnets of course.”

A red-hot blush rushed across Sally’s pretty face. “Really?” Tamsin could see the cogs and gears working overtime in Sally’s head.

“I’m joking.” She playfully nudged the other girl. “Just wear whatever you feel comfortable in. Track pants, leotard, leggings, jeans. I seriously don’t care as long as whatever you wear doesn’t restrict your movement and you feel comfortable.” She leaned in conspiratorially. “This is about fun, nothing more and nothing less.”

“I was worried.” Sally nodded, relief evident in every line in her body. “Not for me of course,” she added hastily. “But can you imagine my mum in a corset.”

Tamsin laughed so hard she dropped the keys and they crashed to the floor. “Oh, I’m sorry,” she said as she wiped tears from her eyes. “An image of Sue in a red satin corset and garters sprung to mind and well…” she peeled off into laughter again. Sally joined her, both women doubling over with mirth, unable to speak.

“What’s so funny ladies?” A male voice interrupted their fun.

The girls stopped laughing long enough to croak out a welcome.

“Hello Angus,” Sally managed before she snorted in an effort to contain a great bellow of laughter.

“Hi there.” Tamsin waved, weak from laughter. “Just sharing a girly joke.” She scooped up the keys from the floor.

“Ah. I see.” The frown on his face told otherwise. “I’ve brought you something.” He stood awkwardly in the doorway like a shy teenage boy.

“I better go.” Sally hugged Tamsin quickly before scurrying to the door. “See you tomorrow night,” she called as she slipped past Angus and out into the street.

“Good to see you making friends.” Angus shoved his hands in his pocket and took a step into the room.

“Sally is lovely. So are the rest of the girls at La Coiffure. They’re all coming for lessons tomorrow night.” Tamsin gave Angus her full attention. Ever since they’d made up over Nureyev’s pig pen things were back to normal.
